International admissions guide

Thailand University Admission Requirements

Compare the documents and qualifications commonly requested for undergraduate and graduate study, then confirm the current criteria with your chosen program.

Reviewed October 5, 2026 · Requirements vary by institution and program

Admission routes and credential equivalency

Thai applicants commonly use the central TCAS selection system, which has different rounds and program rules. International applicants may use a university or faculty application portal, or a TCAS route, depending on the program. Check the instructions for the exact degree and intake rather than assuming every international applicant follows the same process.

Overseas or non-Thai credentials

Applicants with overseas secondary credentials or GED may need an equivalency certificate or equivalent GPA documentation for some Thai application routes. Start this check early; the program or TCAS will say which certificate is required.

Program rules are decisive

A university may publish separate criteria for each faculty, international program, and application round. Check the academic year shown on the announcement because requirements can change between intakes.

Official TCAS calendar and equivalency information

Undergraduate admission requirements

Bachelor’s applicants generally need to complete upper secondary school or an accepted equivalent. Programs may assess grades alongside subject preparation, English proficiency, standardized tests, portfolios, interviews, or entrance examinations.

Academic qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent credential accepted by the university.
  • Official transcripts and grading information for the required school years.
  • Subject prerequisites for fields such as engineering, science, business, or health sciences.
  • Credential equivalency documents where the application route requires them.

Tests and selection

  • English evidence for English-medium programs, using the tests and scores listed by that program.
  • Some programs accept alternatives or provide an exemption based on prior English-medium study.
  • Some use SAT, subject tests, portfolios, interviews, or faculty-specific entrance exams.
  • Thai-language programs may have Thai proficiency requirements.

There is no universal minimum GPA or IELTS score for Thai undergraduate admissions. For example, Chulalongkorn’s ISE publishes its own 2027 criteria; those thresholds apply to that program and intake only.

Master’s and doctoral admission requirements

Graduate applicants usually need a recognized bachelor’s degree for a master’s program, or the prior degree specified by the doctoral program. Departments may consider grades, professional experience, research fit, and program-specific prerequisites.

Academic record

Degree certificate and official transcripts from previous institutions.

English proficiency

Accepted tests, scores, exemptions, and score-validity rules are set by each program.

Purpose and experience

Statement of purpose, CV, professional history, or portfolio where requested.

Research readiness

Doctoral programs may request a proposal, supervisor fit, recommendations, or an interview.

A program may set a GPA floor, accept conditional admission, or waive an English score in specified cases. Read the current faculty announcement and ask the graduate office how it evaluates foreign credentials.

Example: Thammasat graduate English requirements by program

Application document checklist

Use this as a preparation list, then follow the program’s application portal for file format, certification, translation, and submission instructions.

✓Passport or accepted identity document
✓Academic transcripts and completion certificates
✓Credential equivalency documents if required
✓English test report or exemption evidence
✓Program application form and application fee
✓Personal statement or statement of purpose
✓Recommendation letters for programs that request them
✓CV, portfolio, research proposal, or test score where applicable

Some institutions request notarized or certified translations, original documents, medical records, or additional forms. Do not arrange extra certification unless the institution or relevant authority asks for it.

Application steps and timing

  1. 1

    Choose a program

Compare curriculum, language of instruction, prerequisites, tuition, and current intake dates.

  2. 2

    Check eligibility

Read the official page for your degree, faculty, applicant type, and academic year.

  3. 3

    Prepare credentials and tests

Request transcripts, equivalency records, recommendations, translations, or test results early where needed.

  4. 4

    Submit the application

Use the portal or TCAS route identified by the program and retain the submission confirmation.

  5. 5

    Complete selection steps

Attend any interview or examination and respond to requests for original or additional documents.

  6. 6

Accept the offer and plan travel

Confirm enrollment arrangements, then follow the university’s instructions for the appropriate student visa.

Intakes and fees

Thailand does not have one deadline or intake calendar for every university. Some programs offer multiple entry periods; others admit once each year. Application fees and tuition also vary. Check the program’s current dates and fee schedule before planning.

After admission: student visa planning

An offer of admission does not itself authorize study or residence in Thailand. Ask your institution which visa category and support documents match your program, then use the Thai mission’s current checklist. Visa category, financial evidence, fees, and processing vary by case.

Thailand university admissions FAQs

What are the admission requirements for a university in Thailand?

Requirements depend on the university, degree level, and program. Common items include prior education records, transcripts, identity documents, and any English tests, essays, interviews, portfolios, or subject scores specified by the program.

Is there a minimum GPA for Thai universities?

There is no single GPA minimum across Thai universities. Each program publishes its own academic criteria, and some use additional test scores or portfolio review.

Do I need IELTS or TOEFL to study in Thailand?

Many English-taught programs request evidence of English proficiency, but accepted tests, minimum scores, validity periods, and exemptions vary. Check the exact program requirements before booking a test.

Do international students apply through TCAS?

It depends on the university and program. Some international programs accept applications through their own portals, while other routes use TCAS. TCAS also publishes equivalency guidance for some applicants using overseas or GED credentials.

When should I apply?

Intakes and deadlines vary by program. Work backward from the specific application deadline and allow time for transcripts, credential equivalency if required, test results, recommendations, and visa preparation after admission.

Can I work while studying in Thailand?

Admission to a university and an ED student visa do not by themselves authorize employment. Confirm applicable work authorization rules with Thai authorities before accepting paid work or an internship.
